Passing the “eye test” is something you hear scouts say about guys that look good walking around in a uniform.  It has nothing to do with a players actual ability, but it does make a prospect an easier sell.  It makes it seem easier to project what a prospect will look like in the future and really helps people raise the ceiling of that prospect.  Since before Jake Herbert got into high school (he is only in his freshman year), he has passed the “eye test.”  Jake is a firmly built 6’2 Catcher/Pitcher that is very athletic for his young age.  He has always played up in age group but you would never be able to physically tell.  The “eye test” aside though, this guy can flat out play!  Even though he has been pushed every year he has played FTB, he has responded with production.

Behind the plate, Jake has very sound footwork, soft hands, and very strong and accurate throwing arm.  He does a good job receiving and remaining very quiet with his body.  As he develops his high baseball IQ will allow him to be a quality pitch caller.

On the mound, Jake could be a legitimate power arm.  I have seen him fill up the zone with low to mid 80s fastballs at age 13/14.  Having a catchers mentality, he always competes!  It would be easy to want to develop him as a pitcher only.  The only problem is behind the plate and offensively, he is just too good right now.

Already mentioning his big, strong frame.  Jake generates well above average bat speed and has a knack for barreling the baseball up.  He is very aggressive in his approach looking to hunt fastballs and attack.  He has sounds mechanics and timing, and his swing plain generates natural loft.  The power arm and power bat that Jake can bring to the table as he continues to develop will put him in a position to help FTB continue the tradition of making deep runs in tournament playoffs.

The “eye test” is a great box to check.  Jakes ability to be pushed and produce is just a testament of his character and work ethic.  I hear Character and work ethic are important at the catching position.  The future is now for Jake Herbert!
